Joining hands with community leaders
We only go to a community where we can work together with the community leaders. Meetings are usually held with all the community leaders to obtain their blessing before an outreach. It is a privilege to see community leaders from all population groups joining hands to work together. The community remains in control and we are there simply to help.
Working with the Children and Youth
The Youth team works with all the children of 3 to 18 years of age – well, sometimes even older! The youth team consists 80% of High School children between the age of 13-18 and they are passionate about the youth. On aggregate we work daily with 300 -400 kids. Most of the poor communities survive on schools feeding schemes, but when the schools break up for the holidays they also stop. It is an absolute privilege to spend time with the children. We sing, play games, do fun lessons, and make amazing handcrafts. Afterwards a huge song and dance is made of the prize giving! During the day every child receives a cup of hot soup and a sandwich – most welcome in the freezing cold winter. Many of them do not stray far from the soup pot in case we announce second helpings.
Working with Adults
The Adult team became involved when there was a cry for help, very simply that someone would listen to stories of pain and need; for someone from outside who is not part of the community to share their stories. In this safe space people can share their distress. Later on we were able to take along psychologists for cases where professional assistance was required. Referrals were also made so that once we had moved on the relevant people would receive sustained support.
Working with the elderly
The members of the senior’s team really endeared themselves to the people. This team of ladies was led to become involved and make a difference as there is not much to do in the community. We have a team that works daily with the old aged in their usual jobs. They understand and know exactly how to interact with the elderly.
Among other things, they do exercises with elastic resistance bands and make handicrafts. It is hugely gratifying to see just how much the seniors love, appreciate and enjoy this.
